JOB’S MISSION
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, you are responsible for planning and developing individual sessions for the clients. Clients are of various ages, with various special needs and enrolled in one of the following programs: adaptive riding or equine facilitated learning. Keep the
« team » of clients, volunteers and horses functioning appropriately in a safe environment while challenging the client to grow and learn. Must ensure that each member, guest, volunteer and visitor receives the highest caliber of services in a totally non-discriminating, supporting and caring environment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
CLIENT RELATED (Includes but not limited to:)
● Help clients and volunteers to accept horses as a mean of therapeutic comfort, and encouraging each client to grow
● Provide client assessments and then determine their needs and implement sessions based on needs, set and measure goals and objectives
● Match clients with appropriate equines, equipment, volunteers and instructional setting
● Team work with each client and volunteer
● Provide and solicit ongoing feedback from the « team » and the client or client’s family, caregiver, therapist
● Work with parents/client/caregiver to set measurable goals and objectives for each clients; develop activities to help challenge clients to reach their goals
● Conduct each lesson appropriately to each individual client
● Document client activity and progress after each lesson (within 48hr)
● Continually monitor instructional area and enforce safety procedures and a safe working area
● Communicate regularly and appropriately with other staff/therapists regarding client’s progress, needs, successes, concerns, etc…
● Understand the complexities of scheduling clients, volunteers and promote that all schedule changes go through the Program Coordinator
HORSE RELATED (Includes but no limited to) :
● Exercises horses according to schedule
● Evaluate and monitor equine behavior, recognize unsoundness and ailments ; communicate observation/concerns to the Program Coordinator
● Monitor and adjust tack to fit the horse and choose equipment appropriate to each client
● Respect each horse and his/her individual needs and help to maintain the most suited, healthiest and happiest herd of equine therapy horse in the industry
SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Includes but no limited to) :
● Knowledge of horse behavior
● Lunging and exercising horses
● Basic equine health knowledge (sickness & lameness)
● Ability to work with a variety of breeds and equine personalities
● A strong work ethic
● A great team player
● Creative mindset and problem solver
● Work independently, but know when to ask questions
● Have strong customer service skills
● Have a great attention to details
● Have good time management skills
● This is a physical and strenuous job which demands working in adverse weather conditions
● Employee must be able to physically handle lots of bending and twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting
● Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
● Requires repetitive movements
● Requires confidence/experience in dealing with horses and special-needs community
● Punctuality
● Attend trainings as required
● Attend HART activities as appropriate
