Part time Day Shift

Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center, Hartford, CT PER DIEM

This person is responsible for gross descriptions, dissection of surgical specimens and preparation of tissue for processing by the Histology laboratory. Perform and/or supervise post-mortem examination, including review of patient’s clinical history, evisceration and dissection of organs, sampling of tissues, photography of specimens, dictation of gross autopsy findings and preparation of provisional anatomic diagnosis under supervision of attending pathologist.

What You Will Do:

• Assures appropriate specimen accessioning. Obtains pertinent clinical information and history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc.

• Describes gross anatomic features of surgical specimens. Prepares tissues for histological processing and ensures proper type and length of fixation. Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for light microscopy (routine processing). Prepares and submits appropriate tissue sections for special procedures such as frozen section, electron microscopy and immunoflourescence microscopy.

• Obtains biological samples such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies such as flow cytometry.

• Ensures appropriate autopsy consent is obtained prior to performance of autopsies.

• Coordinates diener service to assist with performance of autopsies. Performing postmortem examinations, which may include: external examination; in situ organ inspection; evisceration; dissection and dictation or recording of data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids etc., and gross anatomic findings.

• Facilitates neuropathology dissection and consultation with external neuropathologist.

What you need:

• Education: Completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) program for Pathologists’ Assistant.
• Experience: Minimum of one years’ experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant. This experience must include grossing highly complex specimens in a hospital setting and performance of autopsies
• Certification: Certification by ASCP as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA)
• Job Skills: Demonstrates attention to detail, effective communication and teamwork skills. Works with a limited degree of supervision with oversight focused only on complex new assignments. Acts as an informal resource for colleagues with less experience.
